State: Voicemail about cracks 2 days before bridge fell

Mar 17, 2018

MIAMI — An engineer left a voicemail two days before a catastrophic bridge failure in Miami to say some cracking had been found at one end of the concrete span, but the voicemail wasn't picked up until after the collapse, Florida Department of Transportation officials said Friday. The voicemail left on a landline wasn't heard by a state DOT employee until Friday because the employee was out of the office on an assignment, the agency said in an email. In a transcript released Friday night, Denney Pate with FIGG Bridge Group says the cracking would need repairs "but from a...

Appeals court nixes some FCC rules on robocalls

Mar 17, 2018

MENLO PARK, Calif. — A federal appeals court rolled back rules intended to deter irritating telemarketing robocalls, saying they were too broad. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said that 2015 regulations from the Federal Communications Commission could wrongly classify every smartphone as an autodialing device subject to anti-robocall fines. Those 2015 rules attempted to graft modern definitions onto a 1991 law that predated the iPhone by more than 15 years. The court also struck down rules that could levy fines on telemarketers who repeatedly call phone numbers reassigned to people who have opted out...

No small feat: Santa Barbara Zoo giraffe births 6-foot baby

Mar 17, 2018

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Now that's a big baby! The Santa Barbara Zoo's Masai giraffe, Audrey, gave birth this week. The newborn is 6-foot-1-inch (1.8 meters) and weighs 180 pounds (81.6 kilograms). Curator of Mammals Michele Green says it was a fast and smooth birth, and the female calf stood up and was nursing in only two hours. A medical exam Thursday found the calf to be strong and healthy. The mother and baby remain out of view for now. A naming contest will allow the public to choose from the options of Amirah, Makena, Nugget and Quintin. The zoo...

US says Russian hack did not compromise power grid, plants

Mar 17, 2018

WASHINGTON — A Russian government hacking operation aimed at the U.S. power grid did not compromise operations at any of the nation's power plants, federal regulators and the industry said Friday. Corporate networks at some of the 99 nuclear power plants licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission were affected by the 2017 hack aimed at the energy grid and other infrastructure, but no safety, security or emergency preparedness functions were impacted, the NRC said in a statement. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission also said the incident had no operational impacts on interstate transmission of electricity. Even so, government and industry...

APNewsBreak: EPA may be overstating claims from mine spill

Mar 17, 2018

DENVER — The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it has almost finished an overdue review of damage claims from a Colorado mine waste spill that the agency accidentally triggered, but an internal agency accounting of those claims appears to be off by tens of millions of dollars. An EPA spreadsheet says the claims for economic losses and personal injuries from the 2015 spill at the Gold King Mine totaled more than $2.5 billion. The EPA provided the list to the Associated Press this month under an open records request. But the list appears to overstate by $100 million the value...
